What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is the assessment, management and optimisation of the musculoskeletal system.  At Ahead Physiotherapy, our therapists assess joints, muscles and nerves through special tests that help identify the main problem.  We have two main goals with treatment:  The first is to provide pain relief to get you feeling better (ie. treat the symptoms).  The second is to find the CAUSE of the problem, and to provide a solution to make sure it doesn’t continue to happen.

What does physiotherapy treatment involve?

Your tailored physiotherapy treatment will depend on the underlying issue, but may involve a combination of the following:

  • “hands-on” treatment, called manual therapy (massage, mobilisation),
  • posture and biomechanical retraining (ie. looking at correcting how you move),
  • stretching exercises
  • strengthening exercises
  • taping/strapping,
  • orthotic fitting
  • dry needling (using acupuncture needles)
  • education++ about your condition and tips to get better.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No, in Australia, physiotherapists are known as “first-contact” practitioners, which means you do not need a referral from a doctor to see a physiotherapist.

The only exceptions to this are if you are intending to claim your physiotherapy services through WorkCover, Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), 3rd party insurance, or if you have a Team Care Arrangement (previously known as an Enhanced Primary Care plan).  These require a referral from a medical practitioner.

Do you have HICAPS?

Yes, we have HICAPS at Ahead Physiotherapy, enabling you to claim on-the-spot from your private health fund.

Do you have car parking?

Yes, there is plenty of car parking available, all within very close proximity to the front door.
